With Heart Failure, When is the Best Time to Take Beta Blockers?

Beta blockers are a medication that is commonly provided during chronic congestive heart failure. Beta blockers create an environment for your heart not to contract as strongly as it would so that it can preserve the heart function for a longer period of time.

However there are side effects to this. Beta blockers act in the very sense of the name that it is given in that it blocks the heart from beating a as strongly as it would otherwise. In one specific case, I had a patient that presented with this. I advised that the patient change his afternoon dose to an evening dose. This slight change in dosage in several hours greatly decreased this side effect and my patient was grateful for it.

An article that I have link to shows the importance of timing when it comes to medications, and specifically the medications when it comes to the heart. The article cites studies showing that patient's that do take their medications in the evening have better control of their blood pressure and have a less chance of a severe cardiac event such as a stroke. Of course talk to a qualified provider before making any changes to the timing of your medications.

Do you have an experience with changing of times for taking medications and/or supplements that resulted in a major change in yourself (good or bad)? If so... please share it!
